Graphic Design Artwork: The Importance of Color Modes

Using color modes is very important to achieve the best result in your graphic design work. Web graphics use RGB, print CMYK & finally PMS Pantone matching system. Color modes are used to display the images by determining the color modes.

RGB:

RGB denotes the primary colors Red, Green and Blue. These primary colors are used to display the pictures on television and computer monitors. White is called as addictive color, it creates when Red, Green, Blue colors are mixed together equally.

The secondary colors are Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. The secondary colors are created from different combination of primary colors. Green and Blue create Cyan, Blue and Red create Magenta and Red and Green create Yellow. Black is created from when Cyan, Magenta and Yellow colors are blended together equally.

CMYK:

CMYK is called four color process, used for media and print purpose. The graphic design is in RGB mode, when it is created. You can convert to CMYK mode, but you should check color modes and printer setup.

In CMYK, black is created when combining the major colors of CMYK. Magenta and yellow create Red, Yellow and Cyan create Green and Cyan and Magenta create Blue. White is created when the absence of the major colors of CMYK.

PMS:

Pantone Matching System (PMS) developed to overcome problems with RGB and CMYK. We can use the spot colors from Pantone color book. It ensures the accuracy and consistency with the printer.
